Kindred Motorworks Is Bringing Back Classics

How would you like to drive a classic vehicle? The team at Kindred Motorworks makes it possible for you to drive one of the favorites from years ago.

Three of the most popular and intriguing vehicles in the history of the automotive market are the Volkswagen Microbus, Ford Bronco, and Chevrolet Camaro. These three names are found in different forms today, but all three come from the 1960s to give us some classic vehicles that could be a lot of fun to drive. The only problem: these old vehicles aren’t easy to find.

Common at the Time; Not So Much Now

During the 1960s, you couldn’t shake a stick on the road without hitting one of the three classics mentioned. Although the Chevrolet Camaro came at the end of the decade, it was prevalent as one of the most popular muscle cars of the 1970s. Here we are more than 50 years later, and it’s hard to find these old vehicles in good condition. Sure, some people will take them into their garage and turn an old rust bucket into a rebuilt machine that many can admire, but who has time for that?

What Can You Do if You Want Some Real Style in your EV?

It might seem odd to add electric vehicle style to a conversation about classic vehicles, but when you see what Kindred Motorworks is doing, you’ll realize why. Right now, it seems that every automaker is working toward building new EVs that have a serious movement toward a minimalistic style. It won’t be long before all of these electric vehicles look the same, and it’s hard to distinguish one from the other, no matter how often we tell you what the differences are. Wouldn’t it be great to drive something with real style that’s easy to admire?

Asking for Classic Cars is Irrational, Isn’t It?

How can you expect a company to deliver what you want in a classic vehicle that was made more than 50 years ago? The inner workings wouldn’t be the same, you couldn’t have the drivetrain from the original time, and even if you could find these items, the vehicle wouldn’t be original. How can you have one of these classics today without giving up some of the qualities that make these vehicles special? Also, how can you feel safe driving a car from that era? The answer is that you buy one from a company that’s modernized them.

Don’t Get the Wrong Idea About Kindred

If you think that Kindred Motorworks is a company that only takes shells of these classic vehicles and adds electric powertrains to the mix, you’ve got the wrong idea. That said, Kindred has seen the writing on the wall with the auto industry moving toward EVs for the future. Rather than give up the mantle of restomods, which is what Kindred does best, they’ve developed EV platforms to put under some of these classic vehicles, giving you the marriage of old and new.

What Could You Find in an Electric Model from Kindred?

These three classic vehicles have varying powertrains, but we can see some of the upgrades and modernized qualities offered. Instead of the classic air-cooled drivetrain of the VW Microbus, you’d have a 294-horsepower electric motor that uses a 74.0-kWh battery. This model has an independent rear suspension and a new way for the front suspension to perform. Unlike the original model, this EV VW brings a set of four disc brakes to the drive. These upgrades could work well while giving you a classic look that we admire.

How Far Can a Kindred EV Drive?

Even though the electric powertrains used for these Kindred Motorworks classic cars are still in development, the company states that all EVs will have at least a 200-mile driving range. Each EV will also have a 6.6-kWh onboard charger and a 120V adapter. Eventually, if the desire for these electric vehicles grows, we should see faster charging systems to make it much easier for owners to enjoy the driving ranges offered. That said, most of these restomods aren’t expected to be daily drivers, but they could be.

Traditional ICE Models are Still Available

Kindred continues to build some of these restomods with traditional engines to give some shoppers impressive power for the drive. The 1969 Camaro models come in either an LS or LT build that’s powered by either a 490-horsepower LS376 or 700-horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine. These engines are available with a six-speed manual transmission for the standard LS versions or an 8-speed automatic transmission for the LT version. Each of these classic Camaro models comes with heavy-duty six-piston disc brakes and a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires. If you want a car that takes you back to yesteryear while offering power that wasn’t available then these Camaros can give you what you want.

What Does the Rebuilt Ford Bronco Offer?

If you choose the Ford Bronco restomod, you’ll have a classic 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine that produces 460 horsepower. A set of hydroboost four-wheel disc brakes and 33-ich BFGoodrich off-road tires round out the working items of this SUV. There are three packages for the Bronco, making it easy for customers to have the build they want from Kindred Motorworks.

Modern Features Found in the Cabin

Electric powertrains are certainly modern enough, but other items can be found in these Kindred updated models. You’ll see items including backup cameras, cupholders, and surround-sound audio systems. Even though these restored classics offer the look of many years ago, the only original items for them are the body kits.

How Much Does a Kindred Restomod Cost?

The most affordable restored classic from this company is the Chevrolet Camaro, which starts at $149,000 and ranges up to $199,000. The Ford Bronco holds the middle ground at $169,000 while the Volkswagen Microbus reaches $199,000. These vehicles are available for pre-order, and production will begin at the start of 2024.

Could one of these restored classics be a vehicle you want to add to your collection or become the vehicle you show off on the weekends? Will you go with a classic gas-powered version or a new EV model?
