TikTok challenges are nothing new, and while many of these challenges are harmless, there are others that lead to trouble. One of the latest TikTok videos that’s trending shows users how to steal cars, and unfortunately, Kia and Hyundai are seeing the brunt of it. TikTok users are using the hashtag “Kia Boyz” to post videos teaching people how to start a Kia and Hyundai vehicles without a key. The videos show them how to use just the tip of a phone charger or a USB cable, and it’s wreaking havoc across the country. The challenge started in Milwaukee, where Kia Boyz filmed the original video, but it didn’t take long for the challenge to spread.

Many cities are seeing theft increase by over 700%. Once viewers see how to start the cars, it doesn’t take long to get in and drive away.

Why Kia and Hyundai?

The video targets Kia and Hyundai models that used a key instead of a push-button start, but models from 2015 to 2022 can be vulnerable. The thieves know they can break a back window without setting off the alarm, and once they are in, it takes under two minutes to get the car started. Part of the reason Kia and Hyundai models have been targeted is that some models don’t have an engine immobilizer. This makes it easier for thieves to drive away once they get the car started.

How to Prevent It

The best way to prevent your Kia or Hyundai from being stolen is to get something that will keep it immobilized if thieves are able to get in. A steering wheel lock is one tool, but you can also get an immobilizer.
